Rights statements are displayed above the JSTOR or Artstor rights statement included in the metadata of every item published from Forum. For more information about copyright and fair use, please visit our References for Best Practices.
Published display of rights
Item Rights Statement
To support item-level rights, we've created community lists for RightsStatement.org rights statements and Creative Commons licenses that you can connect to in your projects. The terms will display with badges in both JSTOR and Artstor and link to the rights statement and/or license you select.
When creating new projects, these community lists are already included in the Visual Resources and Dublin Core project templates. Each term includes a description for the term and a URI if available.
See RightsStatement.org and Creative Commons Licenses for more information on using these lists in your projects.
Collection Rights Statement
If you have a rights statement that should apply to every item in your collection, you can set a collection rights statement for collections published to Artstor and/or default Rights Notes to all items in collections published to JSTOR. Collection rights statements and/or Rights Notes will display after any item-level rights statement if one is included.
See Adding a collection rights statement for more information.
JSTOR Shared Collections Rights Statement
Every item published to JSTOR will include this Shared Collections Rights Statement:
This item is being shared by an institution as part of Shared Collections. For terms of use, please refer to our Terms & Conditions.
Artstor Rights Statement
Every item published to Artstor will include this Artstor Rights Statement:
This image has been selected and made available by a user using Artstor’s software tools. Artstor has not screened or selected this image or cleared any rights to it and is acting as an online service provider pursuant to 17 U.S.C. §512. Artstor disclaims any liability associated with the use of this image. Should you have any legal objection to the use of this image, please visit Artstor Copyright Concerns for contact information and instructions on how to proceed.
Adding a collection rights statement
Publishing to JSTOR
While it's not possible to apply a rights statement to items published to JSTOR at the collection-level, you can apply collection-wide rights statements to all items in a collection by supplying a default value on the Rights Notes field in your project(s).
Publishing to Artstor
To add a collection-level rights statement to your Artstor publishing target:
- In your project, select Project Settings.
- Under the Targets tab, select the Artstor target you want to edit and select Edit.
- In the Collection Rights Statement field, copy and paste your rights statement or type it manually. If you have multiple statements to apply to the collection, use a hard return to create line breaks in the text.
- Save your changes.
- Publish or republished your items.
Publishing to Omeka
A rights statement cannot be added to an Omeka API publishing target, but this can be configured in Omeka Admin.
