Publishing target types

In your Project Settings, you can create or edit existing publishing targets to publish your content from your projects. There are several publishing target type options to choose from.

JSTOR

• JSTOR (Institutional or Public) - JSTOR unlocks the potential of your institution’s special collections by making them available on the platform researchers, faculty, and students already know and use. You can choose to make your collection public to make it available to anyone searching or browsing JSTOR or the open web; or institutional to limit access to members of your institution.

Other

• Omeka - Omeka is an open source web publishing platform developed by George Mason University’s Roy Rozenzweig Center for History and New Media. Publishing to an Omeka target allows your content to be accessed through a fully customizable interface. See Managing Omeka targets for more information.
• OAI - Publishing to an OAI server will allow your collections to be harvested and integrated within other environments, such as institutional repositories and discovery systems. See Managing OAI targets for discovery vendors for more information.

Creating a publishing target

To create a publishing target:

1. In your project, select Project Settings.
2. Under the Targets tab, select Add.
3. Choose a target type and follow the on-screen steps to configure your target.
4. When publishing to JSTOR you can configure the following options:
   • Access level
     • Anyone on the open web - Visible to anyone searching or browsing the open web.
     • Your institution - Visible only to members of your institution, including search results.
   • Collection Name/Title - Create a name that is descriptive and specific as possible. While there is no character limit, the ideal length is 80 characters or less.
   • Collection Description - Help researchers understand what’s in the collection. Collection descriptions support limited HTML markup, including hyperlinks. See Using HTML for collection customization for details.
   • Collection Image/Thumbnail - Choose an image that best represents the collection.
     
     • 560 by 400 pixel or larger PNG, JPG, or GIF
     • You may also include an image caption. Consider including the following information in the caption: creator, title, date, media, institution, and copyright.
   • Media download size - Set the maximum download size for image items in the collection or disable downloads for all items. Options include:
     • No Downloads - Prevent item downloads for all items in the collection, regardless of content type.
     • 400 pixels (JPEG)
     • 1024 pixels (JPEG)
     • 3000 pixels (JPEG)
     • Maximum download size (JPEG) - For image items, the size (in pixels) of the original uploaded image file. Note that the downloaded file format and compression may differ from the original.
5. Collection URL - Create a URL for your collection.
   • Important: This URL is permanent and can't be changed later.
6. Click Finish to finish creating your target.

Editing publishing targets

With the exception of the collection access level and URL, you can change options configured when creating your publishing target. To change the access level of a collection (institutional or open/public), see Changing a collection's access level.

To edit an existing target:

1. In your project, select Project Settings.
2. Under the Targets tab, select the target you want to edit and select Edit.
3. You can make changes to the options configured when the target was created, such as the name, description, and maximum download size (see Creating a publishing target), with the exception of:
   • Access level
   • Collection URL
4. Click Save to save your changes.
   

Changing a collection's access level

When you initially create a publishing target, you select an access level for your collection: visible to members of your institution only or to anyone on the open web. While there's not a setting to toggle a collection's access level, you can re-publish your collection to a new target with the desired access level.

1. First, suppress all items published to your existing target.
2. Verify that the collection has been suppressed from the publishing destination before continuing.
3. Create a new target and choose your desired access level for the collection.
4. Publish your project to your new target.

Removing publishing targets

To remove a publishing target from a project, first suppress all items published to that target. Verify that the collection has been suppressed from the publishing destination before continuing.

To delete a publishing target:

1. In your project, select Project Settings.
2. Under the Targets tab, select the target you wish to remove.
3. Select Delete.
