Compilations can be used to aggregate categorical, thematic, or descriptive groups of items (including compound objects and containers) into a sub-collection within a larger collection.
In JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services, compilations are list terms that are applied to individual item records. When published to JSTOR, items assigned to the same compilation are aggregated on a compilation (sub-collection) page.
Compilations offer less fielded metadata options than containers, featuring only a Title/Name and a Description which can be enhanced with HTML markup.

Compilations appear as sub-collections on JSTOR collection pages. They also appear as a facet in the Refine Results sidebar within search results and on collection pages. See Refining results within a collection to learn more.
Creating a compilation
To create a compilation, you’ll add a local term to the global JSTOR Compilation list.
- In the sidebar, open the Cataloging Tools drop-down menu and select Manage Lists.
- Locate the “JSTOR Compilation” list, then select Add.
- Enter a Name for your compilation. (For example: “Women & Gender”.)
- “Name” is the only required field when setting up a compilation, but we also recommend adding a description.
- Select Save to save your compilation term.
- Optionally, open the Media drop-down menu after saving the term to upload a cover image for your compilation.
Uploading a compilation thumbnail / cover image
By default, JSTOR will display the first item published to a compilation as the compilation's cover image on the collection page. Optionally, you can also upload a cover image for your compilation by editing the corresponding term in the JSTOR Compilation list.
- In the sidebar, open the Cataloging Tools drop-down menu and select Manage Lists.
- Locate the “JSTOR Compilation” list, select the term you want to edit, and select Edit button.
- Because “JSTOR Compilation” is a global list, only local terms that your institution has added will be editable.
- If you’re adding a new term to the list, you must first save the term before you can upload media for it.
- Open the Media drop-down menu and choose Upload Media.
- Drag and drop or use the Choose media to upload button to browse for your image file and select Upload.
- Select Save to save the changes to your term.
- If you don’t see the associated media after uploading and saving, try refreshing the page.
Adding content to a compilation
The JSTOR Compilation list is auto-configured to the “Compilation” field when setting up a new project using the JSTOR template. For projects that were not set up with the JSTOR template, you'll need to add a new List field, and link it to the JSTOR Compilation list in your project.
- In your project, select Project Settings.
- Select the Fields tab.
- Select Add Field.
- For "Field Type" choose List Field.
- Under "Field Label" enter a name for your compilation list field. (For example, "Compilation".)
- In the "List Selection" drop-down menu, select the “JSTOR Compilation” list.
- Select the checkbox for any cataloging form(s) you'd like to add this field to.
- Click Create.
Now that the field is included in your cataloging forms, you’re ready to begin editing items in your project to assign them to corresponding compilations using the compilation list field. See Cataloging with list terms for more information.
Compilation field mapping
In your project’s target mapping, the compilation field should map to the JSTOR “Compilations” field. Remember to check your mappings before publishing, and edit the mapping if necessary.
