On this page:
A container describes a larger work or hierarchical organization that contains one or more individual items within a collection. They can be used to group explicitly-like items and ephemera.
Examples:
- Periodicals containing issues
- Books containing chapters
- Audio interviews containing recordings, transcripts, and photos
In Forum, containers are list terms that are applied to individual item records. Any given item can be assigned to only one container. When published to JSTOR, items assigned to the same container are aggregated on a container page.

On JSTOR, containers can be discovered when browsing collections and/or sub-collection pages.
Individual items associated with a container also appear in search results and a link to the container page is listed in the item’s metadata.
Creating a container list
To get started with containers, you'll first need to create a container list in Forum. This local list will contain all of your related containers (terms). For example, a "Periodicals" container list might contain terms corresponding to each of the periodical titles in your project.
To create a container list:
- In Forum, select Lists from the Cataloging Tools menu in the toolbar.
- Open the Actions drop-down menu and choose New.
- Select Container from the menu and click Next.
- Provide a name for your new container list that describes the containers (terms) it will contain. (For example: “Periodicals”.)
- Click Add Container.
You can now add containers (terms) to your container list and then apply these terms to items in your project.

In Forum, containers are terms in a container list that are applied to individual item records.
To add containers (terms) to your container list:
- In Forum, select Lists from the Cataloging Tools menu in the toolbar.
- Locate your container list and click the Add New Term button.
- Provide a "Name" and any additional metadata for your container.

Uploading a container thumbnail / image
By default, JSTOR will display the first item published to a new container as the container's thumbnail and on the container page. Optionally, you can also upload a representative image for your container by editing the corresponding term in your container list.
- In Forum, select Lists from the Cataloging Tools menu in the toolbar.
- Locate the container list containing the term(s) you want to edit.
- If you’re adding a new container (term) to your list, you must first create and save the term before you can upload media for it.
- Select the term you want to edit and click the Edit button.
- Open the Media drop-down menu and choose Upload Media.
- Drag and drop or use the Choose media to upload button to browse for your image file and click the Upload button.
- Click the Save button to save the changes to your term.
- If you don’t see the associated media after uploading and saving, try refreshing the page.
Managing container metadata fields
Editing container field visibility
By default, all container-level metadata fields are displayed on the container page when published. However, there may be fields you wish to catalog in Forum, such as a field for cataloger's notes, but not display on JSTOR.
You can show or hide fields on the container page by editing the container list fields:
- In Forum, select Lists from the Cataloging Tools menu in the toolbar.
- Locate the container list containing the field(s) you want to edit.
- Select the Fields tab.
- Select the term you wish to edit and click Edit Field.
- Check or uncheck the "Visible on JSTOR" checkbox.
- Click the Save button.
- Republish your container items to see your changes reflected on JSTOR.
Adding content to a container
Before you can begin adding items in your project to containers, you’ll first need to add the container list field to your project and map it to the JSTOR "Container" field in your publishing target.
To add a container list field to your project:
- In your project, click the Project Settings button.
- Select the Fields tab.
- Click Add Field.
- For "Field Type", choose List Field.
- Under "Field Label" enter a name for your container list field. (For example: "Periodicals".)
- In the "List Selection" drop-down menu, select the corresponding container list.
- In the "Values" drop-down menu, select "Accept one value only".
- This will prevent items from being cataloged with more than one container term, which isn't supported.
- Select the checkbox for any cataloging form(s) you'd like to add this field to.
- Click Create.
Now that the field is included in your cataloging forms, you’re ready to begin editing items in your project to assign them to corresponding containers using the container list field. See Cataloging with List Terms for more information.
To map a container list field in your publishing target:
- In your project, click the Project Settings button.
- Under the Targets tab, select the target collection name, then select Map Project Fields.
- Locate your container field in the Project Fields column and click the link button in the JSTOR Fields column.
- Select "Container" and click Update.
- Select Save to save changes to your project's field mappings.
Sequencing items in a container
On JSTOR, items in a container can be sorted by Title, Date, or Sequential Order on the container page. (The default sort order is by Title.) To add a sequence number field in your project:
- In your project, click the Project Settings button.
- Select the Fields tab.
- Click Add Field.
- For "Field Type", choose Number Field.
- Under "Field Label" enter a name for your container list field. (For example: "Sequence Number".)
