Adding, editing, and deleting items [Tier 1]

Editing items in a collection

You can edit metadata and associated media files for individual items in your collection. At this time, please note that it's not possible to edit multiple items in bulk in Tier 1.

To edit an item in a collection:

  1. Log into JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services and choose Collections in the sidebar.
  2. On the Collections page, choose your collection and then the item you wish to edit.
  3. On the item page, you can:
    • Edit the item's metadata.
    • Click the Add button after the item preview to add additional media files to the item.
      • Associating more than one media file with an item will create a compound object in your collection.
    • Click the Delete button after the item preview to delete associated media files.
      • Note that this is different than the Delete button that appears before the item preview, which deletes the entire item.
    • Swap out a media file by adding a new file and deleting the original.
  4. Click Save to save your changes.
  5. Click Publish to re-publish the item to your collection.

Deleting items from a collection

To delete an item from a collection:

  1. Log into JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services and choose Collections in the sidebar.
  2. On the Collections page, choose your collection and then the item you wish to delete.
  3. On the item page, click the Delete button that appears before the item preview.
    • Note that this is different than the Delete button that appears after the item preview, which deletes only the associated media file in the preview.
  4. Click Delete to confirm your choice to delete the item.
Note - It may take up to 24 hours for the item to be deleted and removed from both your collection and from JSTOR. During this time, the item will still be visible in both locations.

Adding items to a collection

You can add additional items to your collection by uploading metadata and associated media files for additional items, similar to the process of creating a collection.

Note - At this time, collections created outside of Tier 1 (for example, harvested collections or collections created in Tiers 2-3) cannot be added to in Tier 1. In this case, please contact JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services Support for assistance or questions about adding items to your collection.

To add items to a collection:

  1. Log into JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services and choose Collections in the sidebar.
  2. Click the Add to Collection button after the collection name.
  3. Upload your metadata spreadsheet containing metadata only for the items you're adding.
    • You may wish to use your original metadata spreadsheet as a template.
    • If your spreadsheet contains filenames matching existing items in the collection (i.e. not only those being added), you'll be prompted to remove the duplicate records.
    • If your spreadsheet contains metadata fields (columns) not present in the existing collection, they will be added to your collection. (However, you can only edit or remove fields from a collection during the initial setup.)
  4. Upload the media file(s) corresponding to the filename(s) in your spreadsheet.
    • Filenames must match their corresponding record in your spreadsheet's "Filename" column exactly, including file extensions.
    • Filenames are case-sensitive.
  5. Visit the Collections page to publish the item or your collection. See Publishing items and collections [Tier 1] for more information.
