Feature comparison: Publishing to Artstor versus JSTOR

Publishing Personal Collections from Forum to JSTOR will not be supported; however, users can upload images (JPEG and PNG) to their Workspace.

Publish the same item to both a Public and Institutional collection to bring your institution's collections together on the Institutional Collections page, or to group the same content in different ways.

Publishing the same item to more than one collection is not currently supported.

However, all of your institution's collections are listed together on your institution landing page in JSTOR.

🚧 Support for publishing items to multiple JSTOR collections is planned.

Browsing and Searching

When searching, duplicate and detail views of select works are grouped under a high-quality lead image (image clusters) and user-curated image groups are used to display related images.

When searching, discovery of high quality images is supported by holistic collection ranking, links to an item's collection within search results, and the ability to sort and filter results by image resolution.

Metadata and conceptual similarities are used to display related images and text.

Fields and Mapping

Use prefixes to add freeform text to display labels.

Prefixes are not supported, but you can use available attributes to modify display labels.

Configure if fields are displayed or searchable.

Any field mapped to a JSTOR target field is displayed, with the exception of:

• Earliest/Latest Date, which is not displayed but used for searching and filtering.
• Browse Categories, which is not displayed but facets the list data limited to Artstor Country and Artstor Classification.
• Container field visibility can be configured.

Custom fields are displayed in the order they’re mapped on the item page.

Publish items with multiple titles.

Multiple titles are supported for image items currently.

🚧 Support for multiple titles for text items is planned.

Items without a title display without a title.

Items without a title display with the text “[No title]” on the search results and collection pages, and "[Untitled]" on the item page.

Add additional Collection Rights Statement at the collection level.

Manage custom rights/license statements at the item level by supplying a default value in the Rights Notes field in your project(s) and using batch editing to update existing records.

Work Records

Learn more about compound objects, containers, and compilations.

Link multiple items to a work with work records with the option to group or sequence items linked to a work record on Artstor.

Publishing work records are not supported on JSTOR and support is not planned.

Containers and compilations can be used for hierarchical organization to group items into sub-collections (compilations) or works containing multiple items (containers) such as a periodical containing issues or articles.

Items in compilations may be sorted by Title or Date on JSTOR, and items in containers may also be sorted by Sequential Order.

Compound objects can be used to relate and sequence multiple images related to the same metadata record.

However, you can use containers to group mixed media types together.
